Among its other distinctions, the common thistle is both the national flower of Scotland as well as the 'herb of witches'. Here it's given a noble setting in this medallion-like pendant, much like in a coat of arms, by placing it in a symmetrical pose, putting it at the center, and framing it in a wide wreath of running Celtic knots with a rope border. Spiny leaves curl to either side, overlapping the border and drawing attention inward to the prickly flower that is the focus of the pendant.

The pendant is both cut-out and oxidized with a finely hammered reverse side.

The thistle is often seen as a positive symbol of bravery, toughness, resilience, and determination, as it survives and thrives under very harsh conditions. Its prickly flower also keeps it from being eaten by animals. In some parts of Europe it is called 'the flower of the sun' and is hung on the front doors of many homes for protection. They are also sometimes given as a gift to someone who is fighting a battle, working through a difficult situation, or has triumphed over adversity.
